How Acupuncture Can Help

Acupuncture is well established as a complementary medicine, which is non-toxic and minimally invasive.

Very thin needles are inserted in the body at specific points to improve the organs functions and the distribution of the vital substances to produce a more balanced internal environment. Mostly known to the public as a valid pain reliever, acupuncture has much broader applications that span from musculoskeletal to the ailments of the mind.

These benefits include:

  • Sciatica, back pain, neck pain
  • Frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, golf elbow
  • Tinnitus, vertigo, headaches
  • Cough, asthma, bronchitis
  • Palpitations, high/low blood pressure
  • IBS, IBD, Ulcerative Colitis, bloating, acid reflux
  • Constipation, diarrhoea
  • Lack of period, painful period, heavy period, hot flushes
  • PCOS, endometriosis, cysts, fibroids
  • Infertility
  • Anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, insomnia

Your Appointment

Welcome & consultation

At your fist appointment we extensively discuss your symptoms, medical background and life style. I inform you of how Chinese medicine interprets all these aspects and what I can do to make you feel better. I reply to any questions you might have and give you basic advice that you can apply at home to support your recovery.

Treatment
Based on your symptoms and the feedback of specific diagnostic tools such as pulse and tongue reading, observation and palpation of the relevant areas, I apply a certain number of needles on your body. I will inform you of the dynamics of the session and take in account any feedback and/or concerns of yours to make you feel comfortable and safe.

After treatment
I feedback about the treatment just given and discuss with you the treatment plan that I suggest. Especially in chronic conditions, more sessions are usually required in order to affect the pattern of imbalance and start the recovering. This also depends on your personal circumstances, your response to the treatments and how far you can support your recovery from home with the diet, lifestyle and exercise advice that I provide. I am a good listener and I will try to customise our sessions to your needs and circumstances!

Meet Patrizia

I am fully qualified and insured to provide Acupuncture, Tuina (Chinese massage), Moxa, Cupping and Gua Sha. My practice is deeply rooted into Qigong and is fully delivered on the holistic principle that health is the result of synergic actions linked to many aspects of our lives. Consequently, I pay great attention to your diet and general lifestyle and provide significant advice in line with the clinic sessions. This will be a great tool to support your recovery as well as establishing healthier habits for future wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chinese medicine works quite well for both. Usually acute conditions resolve much quicker whereas chronic ones require more sessions and spread over a longer period of time.

When acute, the ailment is generally due to external factors (either atmospheric or trauma) and the treatment is mostly focused on the affected tissues. If the acute symptom is the outcome of an internal imbalance which might have been lingering for a longer period undetected, the treatment will also look at the main internal organs and might require more sessions.

‘Chronic conditions’ means that they have been going on for a long period (stated as more than 6 weeks) during which more aspects have been progressively involved along the way. The autoimmune conditions fall under this category too. In these cases, treating the root cause might not be as straight forward and some actions are needed in order to unravel a complex presentation.

Chinese Medicine encompasses different types of therapy, so clients should always ensure their therapist is qualified to perform their prescribed treatment in order to minimise the risk of malpractice. Some may think that using needles can present some risk linked to hygiene, but this risk is minimised by using disposable needles from sterile packages. Clients are informed that some bruising may appear if the needle hits a blood vessel, but this is generally superficial and doesn’t last long. It is crucial that the client informs the therapist of any allergic reaction to metals, in which case golden needles will be used instead. Their medical history is also an important part of the initial consultation which clarifies the cautions to be taken during the treatment.

Usually clients are booked in for 60 minutes but at the first appointment I encourage them to book for 90 minutes so we have more time towards the consultation. Follow-ups can easily last 60 minutes but some clients prefer having longer sessions that they can then spread more apart, depending on the nature of their condition.

To insert the needles, I need to work on the naked surface of the body. It is also very important that I can see and palpate the area affected or the relevant channels, this usually means that I can either need access to your legs, arms, back or abdomen. I usually advice to wear comfortable, loose clothing and many clients wear shorts to make them feel more comfortable.

Viewed holistically, any medication is part of the client’s wholeness, I always ask my clients what medication they are on in order to understand what effect (and side effects) they are experiencing but I would never ask them to stop their existing medication. Clients should always ensure that their therapist is informed of any existing medications, or significant ones they have taken in the past.

Yes of course and know that it can also help you in case the flow is not even or you are experiencing any form of congestion or discomfort.

This cannot be generalised as it really depends on the issue to be treated and the clients’ circumstances. Sometimes closer sessions are advised when working with the momentum, whereas some other times I advise to let the treatment to unfold over a longer period of time.
Back in the old times medicine was used as a prevention and people would get treated on regular basis in order to prevent more serious illnesses. Nowadays this is not really doable for many reasons but a regular ‘top-up’ every two-three months would be beneficial. In the meantime, keeping and eye on diet, life style and exercise is what I highly recommend as a form of maintenance and prevention. In this regard, I offer remote health coaching to those who struggle to keep up with the home work.

After a session nothing prevents you from going straight to work or into any other activity, but it would be good to give yourself some time by the end of the day to just relax and take it easy because after all a treatment requires a certain investment of energy.

I often advice a nice warm bath with salts, especially when part of the treatment was meant to promote relaxation of the tissues or of the mind.

Testimonials

Having been with another acupuncturist for a year I moved to Patrizia because her knowledge was considerably broader and extended beyond the westernised form of TCM that is prevalent today. I was not disappointed at all. Patrizia takes a holistic approach to health from a Chinese perspective, going beyond the usual diagnostic methods and treatment techniques.
Favio S, University Lecturer

Patrizia offers her unique knowledge, experience and wisdom of healing with compassion and curiosity. Her approach is non intrusive and sensitive. Patrizia uses both Tuina and Acupuncture helping me connect more deeply to my body.
Gareth P, Psychotherapist

Patrizia is hugely knowledgeable about Chinese Medicine and takes time to learn about everything from my diet and nutrition to sleep patterns and energy levels. She has used Acupuncture and Tuina to release tension in my back and neck. Every time I come out the aches have diminished and I feel so much lighter and calmer. The space she creates is relaxing, welcoming and nurturing, and treatments are carried out with great skill and kindness.
Katy ESB, Architect

I strongly recommend Patrizia, she really helped me with my upper back pain. After the Tuina massage I felt more relaxed and the pain disappeared.
Rosa A, Business System Analyst

I started to see Patrizia in August with symptoms of Chronic Spontaneous Idiopathic Urticaria that I had had for nearly 1 year. After having no success with primary care and Dermatology – I was completely miserable and at my wits end. I had read some clinical studies online to suggest that acupuncture can promote relief and recovery from these symptoms so I thought I would give it ago. I immediately warmed to Patrizia and felt comfortable with her due to her friendly and non-judgemental personality. I was very impressed by how knowledgeable she was about her practice and how the body works. I felt near immediate relief from my symptoms after just one session, and will continue to go. I never felt pressured to make purchases or book more sessions in. Patrizia also looks at your health holistically and makes suggestions for things you can try outside of sessions. I have recommended a Patrizia to a friend who was also extremely impressed by her. It seems she can help with a lot of different health conditions or issues. I look forward to my sessions with Patrizia and feel extremely calm and well looked after in her presence. Thank you so much!
